My father is getting older and he’s no longer able to manage things on his own like he once was. It’s strange that I am at the point in my life where I’m going to begin caring for my father, who has always been my caregiver. My father still works part-time, but I can tell that his age is really starting to affect his energy as well as the way he thinks and processes things. I’ve begun to start helping him around the house, cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking when I have the time. I know that my dad is having a hard time letting go of some of his responsibilities. I myself is also wondering what is going on with the contestants of Miss Puerto Rico Universe pageant. I read the news lastnight and I am glad that the beauty pageant organizers were investigating this now as to who doused a contestant Ingrid Marie Rivera's evening gowns with pepper spray and spiked her makeup, causing her to break out in hives. She manages to keep calm and was composed before cameras and judges throughout the competition but they said that at the backstage, she had to strip off her clothes and apply ice bags to her face and body, which swelled and broke out in hives twice. It was done twice to her and pageants officials are now investigating. Could this be due to some jealousy?

Story: An American Elm Tree

I understand that one of the most-sacred symbols in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is a tree, a sprawling, shade-bearing, 80-year-old American Elm. Tourists drive from miles around to see her. People pose for pictures beneath her. The city carefully protects her. She adorns posters and letterheads. Other trees grow larger, fuller, even greener. But not one is equally cherished. The city treasures the tree not because of her appearance, but her endurance. She endured the Oklahoma City bombing. Timothy McVeigh parked his death-laden truck only yards from her. His malice killed 168 people, wounded 850, destroyed the Federal Building, and buried the tree in rubble. No one expected it to survive. But it did. The tree became the symbol of hope. So they gave the elm a name: the Survivor Tree. People who are suffering or witnessing tragedy in their life come to look upon that tree to remind them to persevere in the midst of it all. It gives them hope to carry on, to survive.

Women can turn the tide in HIV/AIDS epidemic

Your Excellency, President Kibaki, honourable representatives of the Government of Kenya, representatives of the YWCA, colleagues from the United Nations system, ladies and gentlemen,

First let me thank the World YWCA Council for organizing this event, and the government of Kenya for hosting it.

In December 2003, the 3 by 5 initiative was launched here in Kenya on World AIDS Day. The initiative was the vision of my predecessor, Dr JW Lee.

At that time, more than four million Africans were in need of antiretroviral treatment. Only 100,000 of these people were receiving treatment.

The initiative did not have a perfect strategy. There was no guarantee of success.

Not every problem of eligibility, logistics, implementation, and funding had been solved.

The sceptics were certain that something so complex as antiretroviral therapy could not work in resource-poor settings.

They said doctors could not prescribe. Patients could not comply. Governments could not pay.

But an engine was set in motion. The spirit – the force that drove that engine – was pure and simple: something must be done!

The 3 by 5 initiative was also an appeal to fairness. Is it fair to deny access to life-sustaining treatment for reasons of country of birth, income level, or social status?

That argument was compelling.

Research offered simplified treatment regimens. Commitment increased, as did funds. NGOs, activists, and civil society rallied.

Drug prices dropped. People were brought back to life by these “resurrection” drugs.

Last year we saw a very important milestone. The number of people in sub-Saharan Africa receiving these drugs passed the one million mark.

That is proof of principle. It can be done.

We have seen a second milestone: a commitment to universal access to prevention, treatment, care, and support for all who need it by 2010.

We must all work together to make sure this promise is kept.

We have seen considerable progress, but we are still running behind this devastating, unforgiving epidemic.

For every person starting treatment, another six people will become newly infected within a year.

How can we catch up?

I believe there are three critical pathways to follow.

First, we must steam ahead, full power, in the quest for universal access to treatment and care. It is the only fair and humane course to take.

Second, we must seize every opportunity for prevention. This is the only way to catch up.

We need to catch up on the prevention of HIV infections in infants. The principle of fairness dictates that we do so.

Half a million infants are born with HIV each year. Around 80% of them are born in sub-Saharan Africa.

In affluent countries, mother-to-child transmission of HIV has been virtually eliminated.

The Old Phone

When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it.

Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone's number and the correct time.

My personal experience with the genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy.

I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear. "Information, please" I said into the mouthpiece just above my head.

A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear.

"Information."

"I hurt my finger..." I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.

"Isn't your mother home?" came the question.

"Nobody's home but me," I blubbered.

"Are you bleeding?" the voice asked.

"No," I replied. "I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts."

"Can you open the icebox?" she asked.

I said I could.

"Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger," said the voice.

After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts.

Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, Information Please," and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?"

She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, "Wayne always remember that there are other worlds to sing in."

Somehow I felt better.

Another day I was on the telephone, "Information Please."

"Information," said in the now familiar voice. "How do I spell fix?" I asked.

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston. I missed my friend very much. "Information Please" belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me.

Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.

A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown Operator and said, "Information Please."

Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well.

"Information."

I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?"

There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess your finger must have healed by now."

I laughed, "So it's really you," I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?"

I wonder," she said, "if you know how much your call meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls."

I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister.

"Please do", she said. "Just ask for Sally."

Three months later I was back in Seattle. A different voice answered "Information." I asked for Sally.

"Are you a friend?" she said.

"Yes, a very old friend," I answered.

"I'm sorry to have to tell you this," she said. "Sally had been working part-time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago."

Before I could hang up she said, "Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne?" "Yes." I answered.

"Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called.

Let me read it to you."

The note said, "Tell him there are other worlds to sing in.

He'll know what I mean." I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.

Once you have chosen to be miserable, it will require a great deal of energy and effort to maintain that state of misery. By contrast, when you choose happiness, that happiness actually brings additional energy and positive passion to your life.

Judgment and Understanding

On occasion, it is useful and necessary to make judgments about what other people do and say. Much of the time, though, it can be a waste of your time and energy.

In fact, one of the biggest obstacles to effective listening is the habit of continually and immediately making judgments about what is being said. When the mind is so preoccupied with judging and criticizing, it has no space left for learning and understanding.

Different people have different approaches to life and different opinions. In that diversity there is much value.

Yet when you are too quick to pass judgment, you can miss much of that value. When you become too focused on showing how clever you are or proving your point, you can pass up the opportunity to gain real wisdom.

Certainly it is appropriate and wise that you exercise judgment to prevent others from harming you or taking advantage of you. Remember, though, to balance that judgment with understanding and acceptance.

Relax your judgment and you'll increase your awareness. The more often you practice acceptance, the more wisdom and understanding you'll gain.

If you are a movie watcher, you must be familiar or must have heard of his name. Actor John Travolta donated $15,000 to central Florida tornado victims at the premiere of his new film, "Wild Hogs." Nice job Mr. Travolta. It's a great thing to share kindness and share blessings tot hose in need. Reports said, he presented a personal check for $15,000 to Lady Lake Mayor Max Pullen before the screening of the biker buddy comedy Friday night. It raised an additional $15,000 in donations. Wow! great news! Thanks to those who donated and shared. If you have not heard from the news, a string of tornadoes killed 21 people, many from Lady Lake. That tornadoes destroyed hundreds of home as they skipped across central Florida.

Great charity work. More power to Mr. Travolta!

Petty Officer 3rd Class Philip Oppliger, corpsman and 22-yaer-old from Bend, Oregon, treated the wounds of a Marine who was injured in an improvised explosive device blast, Jan. 18, 2007. Oppliger and the corpsmen of the Hawaii-based 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment are credited with saving the lives of dozens of Marines and Sailors since they arrived in Haditha four months ago.

I always have a huge respect to Marines, Cops, Navy and the likes. Their bravery and patriotism to serve their countrymen are just awesome. I wish more people will appreciate the their hard works to protect law abiding citizen from any harm. Many of these corpsmen saves lives and in most instances them saving lives risks their own lives. They are people like us you know, they have families and love ones and they can always choose to have another job, but they choose to serve the country. Much respect for all of you heroes :)

MONROVIA, Liberia - The United Nation's first women-only peacekeeping contingent — made up about 100 Indian policewomen — arrived in Liberia Tuesday, officials said.

Ben Malor, spokesman for the UN's 15,000-strong peacekeeping force in the West African country, said the force will be stationed in the capital.

Women have served in many UN peacekeeping forces, but this is the first women-only group. Members of the group have said they hope their unit will be seen as more approachable by women and children in conflict zones.

Last year relief groups in Liberia accused UN peacekeepers and aid workers of trading food for sex with girls left homeless by war. The United Nations has since instituted strong policies to prevent sexual exploitation in the country.

About 20 men were accompanying the group of 103 women to provide logistical support, according to a UN statement.

About 200,000 Liberians are believed to have been killed in the 1989-2003 civil war, which also displaced half the country's 3 million people. The country — created to settle freed American slaves in 1847 — is still struggling to recover.

The UN peacekeeping mission has been present in Liberia since a 2003 peace deal ended the fighting.

Fundraising group gives Children's $500K

Great news! The Children's Medical Center of Dayton received an awesome $500,000 commitment from one of its fund raising organizations. Wohoooo. This is so great. I am sure the money will helps lots of in need children.

The group, Terrific Women in Giving, a volunteer auxiliary organization that raises money for Children's Medical Center, made the three-year pledge. Bless you guys! you truly are terrific. They're supporting the establishment of a nursing excellence endowment fund and to purchase patient monitors for the general pediatric unit. The pediatric unit will be undergoing a renovation and is expected to be completed this year. They also recently presented a $228,500 check to complete a previous $500,000 pledge to the hospital. I hope more wonderful group like this will be born to help those in need. More power to the group! Great job!
